Wu Jian'an's Solo Exhibition

Best of Discipline; Gold

PILLS was invited to exhibition design for Wu Jian'an's solo exhibition "It's the Sea, It's the Dune" at the Silk Road International Art Exchange Center, Heibei, China. Wu Jian'an is known for his practice of synthesizing various materials and media, giving a new perspective to ancient myths, totems, folkloric techniques, stories, and traditional writing. From flat to three-dimensional, from figurative to abstract, his works inspire and awaken a certain collective memory by echoing the distant past, triggering people's reverie about the world.
This exhibition features large-scale installations by the artist, and the spatial design aims to create an immersive and surreal ambiance to synchronize with the works’ narration that expands across space-time and civilizations. The 5m high sand dune constructs the core of the exhibition space, and the program uses the undulating terrain of the sand dune to navigate the exhibition and connect different themes of the artist's works. We hope that the audience will experience the exhibition through the desert walking - climbing the dunes along the zigzagging paths, passing through the forest of reflections, arriving at the black sea, and completing a mysterious journey to an ancient sci-fi world. The two searchlights on the diagonal of the venue constitute the main light source of the exhibition, lighting up alternately every minute, as if the artificial "sun" is rising in the east and setting in the west. The limited space and the works show different appearances under different luminous environments, creating a visual atmosphere of flowing light and shadow. The surface of the dune is covered with real river sand, and the walls are made of sustainable materials. We hope to realize the sustainable exhibition design and meanwhile give the viewers the sensation of returning to nature.
Between truth and myth, image and illusion, there lies the sea, lies the dune.
