“Studio Yuan”

In the second half, domestic design experts and new-generation designers delivered speeches on topics such as the boundaries of posters and the future of posters, so as to form a dialogue between "Shanghai Design" and global design. Nie Qing, Member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Shanghai University, Chen Jing, Secretary of the Party Committee of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Song Guoshuan, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Chen Qing, Vice President of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, and dozens of domestic and foreign design guests attended the summit and gave speeches.

"Shanghai Design 10×10" is an exhibition project extended from the concept of "Shanghai Design" by Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, aiming to enhance the international influence of "Shanghai Design" and promote the global promotion of "Shanghai Design". Under the concept of “constructing platform”, “concentrating energy”, “mutually enthusiasm” and “creating the future together”, "Shanghai Design 10×10" will create an international design exchange platform for "Shanghai Design". It gathers design competition organizations and design institutions with worldwide, long-standing, crossing four continents and top influences, and holds "'Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Award Exhibition" and "'Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Design Summit” every two years, to build a high-end platform for global design cooperation and exchange, serve the academic community, and boost the global influence of Chinese design.

"Shanghai Design 10×10" started in 2018. "2018 "Shanghai Design 10×10" Global Award Exhibition" invited 10 top design competitions from all over the world, and selected 10 outstanding winning works to participate in the exhibition. In the form of exhibitions, seminars and album publications, the competition has been constructed as the best platform to connect the global design "big competitions, grand prizes, masters". "2019 'Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Design Summit" invites leaders from 10 influential design organizations around the world to gather together to speak out in Shanghai and share their institutional culture, design concepts and outstanding achievements. They also offer suggestions on issues such as Shanghai Design and the future development of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts. The "2020 'Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Award Exhibition" online exhibition builds a "virtual pavilion" of design art in the cloud, igniting the flame of design again. The exhibition is connected with the Global Design Awards to showcase the new insights, new experiences and new thinking of global designers in the context of a community of shared future for mankind from the perspectives of products, architecture and visual communication.

This event is the fourth year of "Shanghai Design 10×10", which consists of "2021' Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Poster Invitational Exhibition" and "2021' Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Design Summit", presenting the design grand occasion of "Design Exhibition + Global Summit". The "2021 'Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Design Summit" is divided into two sessions, the first half of which is co-chaired by Professor Chen Qing, Vice President of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and Prof. Apex Lin,Pang-Soong, Distinguished Professor of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts.

Nie Qing, member of the Standing Committee of the Party Committee and Vice President of Shanghai University, delivered a welcome speech. First of all, on behalf of Shanghai University, she warmly welcomed all the guests to the "2021 'Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Design Summit". The city of Shanghai, known as the "Modern City", has achieved leapfrog development in the past 100 years. The attributes of openness, inclusiveness, grandeur, and modesty have made it a remarkable achievement in the process of building a world-renowned city and an international metropolis. The Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts of Shanghai University, as an art academy named after the city, has also played an increasingly important role in the construction of Shanghai Design Capital. It connects Shanghai with the world through art and design, focuses on Shanghai to realize the construction task of the world's core city, empowers the overall improvement of Shanghai's design power, and promotes the globalization of Chinese modern design. The "Shanghai Design 10×10" event has gone through four years of development and has played an important role in the global promotion and dissemination of Shanghai design. She hopes that all guests can speak freely here, and make suggestions for the future development of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, for the development of the city, and for the design of all mankind.

One of the chief planners of this summit, Professor Chen Qing, Vice President of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, reviewed the connotation and development of the "Shanghai Design 10×10" project, and solemnly introduced the 10 representatives of 10 design organizations who attended the summit.

As one of the chief planners of this summit, Prof. Apex Lin,Pang-Soong gave a detailed introduction to these 10 design organizations and representatives. "As the bright moon shines over the sea, from far away you share this moment with me." Although the epidemic has blocked the guests, all the guests gathered here because of the bright moon of "Shanghai Design". Looking back on the four years that "Shanghai Design 10×10" has gone through, "Shanghai Design 10×10" has created many "world's best". It invites 10 influential design organizations or design competitions around the world to hold large-scale events every year, launching the cultural brand of "Shanghai Design 10×10" internationally. He also created the theme poster himself and named it "'Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Poster Symphony" as a tribute to this event.

Under the auspices of Prof. Apex Lin,Pang-Soong, Mr. Xavier Bermúdez, Chairman of the Bienal Internacional Del Cartel En MÉxico A.c.Cso International Poster Biennial In Mexico, was the first to speak and counted his recommendations to participate in the "2021' Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Poster Invitational Exhibition". The 10 works are from designers from different countries, different cultural backgrounds and different languages. The cultural diversity is well reflected in these works. For example, the work "From Buenos Aires You Can See Shanghai" reflects Shanghai elements such as the dragon and the circles of the Oriental Pearl Tower. The work "Culture as a continent" depicts the colorful neon lights of Shanghai. The work "Shanghai style: The Crossroads for Openness and Innovation" shows the development process of Shanghai style culture. The work "Shanghai. Moderna. Imagen. Estilo" shows the great achievements of Shanghai's urban construction and so on.

The chairman of the Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition, Mr. John Gravdahl, introduced that his University Poster Collection and Exhibition Hall has preserved all the poster works in the past 40 years and held the Poster Biennale. At present it has become one of the most influential exhibitions in the world. The Colorado International Poster Biennale is interesting and unique. Judges will evaluate the participating works from different perspectives. The committee invites cross-industry design masters to exhibit special works, bringing a creative learning experience. The terrain of Colorado is relatively closed, and posters have become a tool for locals to understand the world and a medium to communicate between designers and the public. In his daily life teaching, teachers and students also achieved mutual learning through poster works. It can be said that posters are playing an increasingly important role in his and the public's life.

Mr. Yoonho, Yoo, President of Korea Ensemble of Contemporary Design (KECD), introduced his design organization. KECD is the oldest and most active association in Korea. It was established in 1969 with the aim of constantly trying various designs, constantly pursuing innovative designs, and constantly conducting design research and practice. In 1993, it became a member of the International Design Association, taking an important step in internationalization, and successfully held major exhibitions such as the 50th anniversary of the association's establishment, the International Invitational Exhibition, and the 11th International Graphic Design Triennial. He said that KECD will not forget the "spirit of design innovation", and together with the guests, focus on international issues and social responsibilities, carry out more meaningful design work, and provide support for the growth of young designers at home and abroad.

Mr. Shigeo Okamoto, Honorary President of Chubu Creators Club, recorded a video in advance, and he spoke in the form of a dialogue with two designers, Ogawa Akio and Kita. They said that as creators, they need to create while observing and thinking about human beings. The new crown epidemic has given many designers the opportunity to slow down and think about design, re-examine themselves, and gain growth through precipitation, rather than losing themselves in the pursuit of quick success. Chubu Creators Club was established in 1973, and has now formed a creation and operation model centered on Asia, centered on communication, and centered on Nagoya. The Japanese designers participating in the exhibition all believe that Shanghai is an Asian metropolis full of cultural diversity. Most of the works selected for the invitational exhibition are based on the impression of Shanghai's "metropolis". For example, Mr. Shigeo Okamoto likened Shanghai to the "Big Apple" (New York) and created "Asian the Big Apple"; Mr. Akio Ogawa created "Enchanted Skyscraper" with Shanghai Oriental Pearl, skyscrapers and Huangpu River as elements; Mr. Norikazu Kita uses black and white square dots to show the light and shadow impression of Shanghai, and highlights the text of "Shanghai" to create the work "Shining Shanghai".

Mr. William Herald-Wong, co-founder and chairman of The Design Alliance Asia, praised Shanghai's history and international status, Shanghai's art culture and design innovation, as well as the diligence and enterprising of Shanghai people. When he visited China for the first time in 2002, he was shocked by the advanced design software infrastructure of universities at that time, and he foresaw the huge development potential of innovative and creative industries in China. As China continues to move forward, it also continues to promote future-oriented joint collaboration, so that designers around the world can feel the energy, passion and enthusiasm of Chinese design in global design. The Design Alliance Asia, which he founded, has selected posters from designers from several Southeast Asian countries, so as to actively seek connections and cooperation with design organizations around the world, and jointly use design to create a better future.

Mr. David Lo, Chairman of Hong Kong Designers Center, introduced the mission of his organization: to promote the wider and strategic use of design and design thinking to create business value and improve social well-being. The center is not only an organization that promotes design, but also an organization that applies design to daily life and business. The spread of the epidemic requires design organizations to stand up and use design to change some daily living habits. He showed the packaging designed by the Hong Kong Design Center for Shuanglu Battery, the logo designed for the Hong Kong Academy, and the packaging box designed for a jewelry company. He believes: "To improve the present is to change the future."

Mr. Serge Serov, chairman of the Moscow Global Biennale of Graphic Design Golden Bee, introduced the connection between the ancient Russian icon paintings and the Russian avant-garde and its contribution to the world's visual culture. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Russian art ushered in a new era of development, and the brand "Golden Bee" was born at that time. The Golden Bee era is actually a new era in the history of global design. It has witnessed the changes of the times and has become a part of the times. Serge summed up the changes in poster art over the past 30 years: high degree of digitization, brighter colors, stronger impact, richer picture layers, more unified text and images, more artistic graphic design, more functional and verifiable. He summed it up as "do what you love".

Mr. Pekka Loiri, Chairman of Lahti International Poster Triennial, Finland, shared his understanding of poster language. Although the language of posters has changed dramatically over the decades, it remains an important medium for understanding the changing world and bringing together current topics. As an artistic carrier that carries ideas, posters make people notice and accurately convey the meaning behind them, which is the core value of posters. This requires designers to work hard on the text and graphic design of the poster to attract people's attention. On the one hand designers can use simple sketches to sketch out some amazing images, on the other hand designers can use rich colors to compose rich patterns.

The chairman of the Brno Biennale Association, Mr. Jan Rajlich Jr., also expressed his congratulations on the event through a video recorded in advance. The ten posters he selected contain different visual languages, from which many of the artist's ingenious designs can be seen.

Professor Chen Qing, Vice President of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, introduced the situation of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts and the organization of this event to the guests online and offline. This year's "Shanghai Design 10×10" is divided into two events: "2021 'Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Poster Invitational Exhibition" and "2021 'Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Design Summit". "2021 'Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Poster Invitational Exhibition" brings together more than 100 visual expressions of "Shanghai Impression" from designers around the world, presenting the image of Shanghai in the impression. As one of the co-curators, she also introduced the works of 14 mainland Chinese designers she invited to participate in the exhibition.

The second half of the summit was chaired by Vice President Chen Qing, Associate Professor Lu Dandan and Teacher Cai Wenchao in turn. It brought together exhibiting designers and guests from Shenzhen, Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai. They discussed topics such as their exhibiting works, the history and development of posters, the media and boundaries of posters, and the future of posters, expanding from the topic of poster design to thinking about the future development of design.

Professor Jin Jiangbo, Chairman of Shanghai Creative Design Workers Association and Vice President of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, first sent his blessings to this event. He affirmed the guests' exploration of design innovation and the design language that constantly breaks through boundaries. He hoped that all the guests could continue to show their talents and contribute more creativity and wisdom to Shanghai as a design capital.

A member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI), Mr. Han Jiaying, a famous Chinese designer, exhibited the poster he designed for the "China International Art Design Fair" held in Shanghai in 1999. At that time, computer technology was just emerging in China. He used computer technology to create this work with the Oriental Pearl as the background, expressing his understanding of Shanghai. Vice President Chen Qing commented that this work is not only a representative work of "Shanghai Design", a window of Shanghai culture, but also a typical "Shanghai impression". This work has become a bridge for the dialogue between the two exhibitions "2021 'Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Poster Invitational Exhibition" and "2021 Shanghai Design Invitational Exhibition - Domain·Poster".

Mr. Zhang Dali, a member of Alliance Graphique Internationale (AGI) and a famous Chinese designer, believes that more and more young people will show their design talents through the medium of posters. He believes that online interactive dynamic posters will become the mainstream of posters with the development of technology, and the imagination and creativity of designers will never be outdated.

Mr. Deng Yuanjian, the ninth executive vice chairman of Shenzhen Graphic Design Association, a famous Chinese designer, described his journey of creating posters——when he tried to describe the charming city of Shanghai, he could not find other suitable keywords, which could be more appropriate than "Modern City". "Modern City" first appeared in the book "Modern City" published in 1924 by the Japanese writer Muramatsu Shoto. Where is the "Modern nature" of Shanghai? Maybe different people have different opinions. The fusion of China and the West, the alternation of the old and the new, the combination of tradition and avant-garde, contradictions, blurs and styles, have created Shanghai's unique urban aesthetics, so that the image of the entire city seems to be extremely complex and chaotic.

Ms. Hou Ying, founder of "INWA DESIGN" shared two series of poster works. The first work is a series of posters of "Weird", which is a work created in cooperation with artist Wang Hezhao for the "Temporary Relationship" interactive exhibition in Huaihai, TX. The exhibition solicited some stories of strange people, using wire and tape to create participatory creations in one day, and form the works on display. The second work is titled "Hundred囍Picture". She created a hundred "囍" characters with Chinese cultural meaning and interest, such as "Happy Eyebrows" in which a magpie stands on a tree plum blossom, "Happiness is in front of my eyes" in which two magpies hug a copper coin, "Happiness falls from the sky" with a spider hanging from the tree, etc. One hundred "囍" characters are made into tape, and more themes and forms of "囍" posters and installations have been derived, which were exhibited for the first time in the top-floor outdoor space of Longfu Temple in Beijing.

"702 Design" art director Mr. Mei Shuzhi discussed the future of posters. From its origin to today, the meaning and coverage of posters have changed greatly. In today's streets, posters with a height of tens of meters are not uncommon. The rapidly developing AR technology may make three-dimensional posters possible, and the recent hot concept of "metaverse" may give the poster industry a new development opportunity.

Mr. Sun Dawang, a partner of "T9 Brand", shared the contents of "free creation with theme and without theme", "customer decides content, designer decides form" through specific design cases. He believes that designers need to think and study more about the project. Through in-depth communication between design and customers, designers can finally clarify the real needs of customers and provide suitable solutions.

Mr. He Rongkai, the creative director of Atmosphere Office, talked about the art and design atmosphere in Shanghai. Designers spontaneously share and communicate here. He hopes to continue to maintain communication with colleagues in the design industry, and to promote the interaction of posters between cities, so as to jointly promote the development of design and posters in Shanghai.

Mr. Han Wenbin, the co-founder of "July-Co" and an outstanding alumnus of the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, believes that posters, as graphic design works, also have a strong literary character. In the design process, designers will go through the process of setting goals, determining the form of expression, establishing expression logic, and implementing specific creations. The process of designing posters is also a process of self-orientation and self-knowledge.

"Studio Yuan" art director Mr. Wang Yuan shared his "Shanghai Impression" through poster works. The content of the works is based on the street signs with the studio as the origin. The day-to-day design work has become his daily life. techniques to express the personal emotions of his daily life in Shanghai.

Ms. Meng Xin, a graphic design studio of the "Related Department", described her perception of the poster: "The poster work may also become a sample of a new product, or it can become itself." Creating images in Shanghai, a highly commercial city, is also a production behavior, which can be infinitely copied and disseminated through developed commercial systems and Internet technology. This is the new normal for poster designers.

Ms. Shao Wei, co-founder of the visual design studio "Thursday-Free", talked about their "Twin Cities Linkage" poster creation mode, and showed their work "Smell for Free", which featured floral, tree, and even wood fragrances. The various smells in the air are their good impressions of the city of Shanghai, and they hope to convey the "sense of smell" with the image technique of posters.

Mr. Jiang Qinggong, art director of "Shanghai Landscape" studio, Mr. Lu Junyi, founder of "Lu Junyi_Design Site" We Media, Associate Professor Zhao Lei, Deputy Director of Design Department of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University, and Associate Professor Wang Ning, Deputy Director of Design Department of Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts, Shanghai University, made a free speech.

Mr. Jiang Qinggong expressed his affirmation and appreciation for the "double event linkage" design event of the summit and the design exhibition. Shanghai's poster design has played the role of "leader" for a long time. He will work with Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts to further systematically sort out Shanghai's graphic design. He expects the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts to assume historical and social responsibilities and further develop Shanghai design.

Mr. Lu Junyi also thanked the exhibition and summit for the opportunity and platform for designers to show themselves. This "exhibition + forum" model plays a role in displaying academic achievements and public education to the outside world, and at the same time systematically sorts out Shanghai's poster design.

The key word of Associate Professor Zhao Lei's speech is "Breaking the Circle", which includes the college's advancement of Shanghai Design as its research content, the linkage of the event's curation and the summit, and the poster dialogue between Shanghai Design and Global Design around "Impression Shanghai" during the exhibition. In the future, the Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts will further sort out the existing achievements and works, transform resources, and better build a new form of Shanghai design.

From this summit, Associate Professor Wang Ning saw the development direction of the Neo-Shanghai style, the whimsical ideas of the new generation of designers, and the present and future of Shanghai design. He also deeply felt that the public and social attributes of posters are constantly increasing, and the research of posters as a communication tool may be a direction for future teaching.

Prof. Apex Lin,Pang-Soong and Prof. Chen Qing finally made a summary and gave thanks. Prof. Apex Lin,Pang-Soong talked about the power of gathering. The Shanghai Academy of Fine Arts has made outstanding contributions to "Shanghai Design" and global design in building a platform and gathering global energy. At the same time, he also affirmed the educative role of the event. He expects the new generation of designers to seize the rare opportunity to grow rapidly and contribute to "Shanghai Design" and global design. As the representative of the organizer, Professor Chen Qing expressed his gratitude to all the guests and staff. She announced the successful conclusion of the "2021 'Shanghai Design 10×10' Global Design Summit", looking forward to global design speaking in Shanghai and future design happening in Shanghai!
