Fort Collins has been notably referred to as Poster City USA. The Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition (CIIPE) is hosted by Colorado State University and showcases outstanding examples of global visual communication to North American and international audiences, promoting international understanding and dialogue through wonderful design innovation. New works are provided by a curated community of poster design masters from six continents. This unique biennial exhibition provides firsthand exposure of diverse prevailing social, cultural and commercial perspectives. For each edition, the CIIPE exhibition committee requests an invited Honor Laureate with a lifetime record of prominence in the poster medium to announce their selection of three equal awards of excellence at the opening of the show. A satellite exhibition and a personal public presentation their creative works also highlight their visit to Colorado.

The CIIPE was conceived in 1979 as a way to encourage aspiring graphic design students and broader communities to personally interact with best poster art produced from around the world. Forty-five years later it continues that mission, even in today’s micro-digital environments. Studying small-sized magazine and electronic thumbnails can be useful but a first-hand viewing with a full-sized poster is a rich experience of large imagery on real walls.

Each of the invited designers submits two copies of two posters, resulting in exhibitions that can approach 200 posters. One copy of the poster is exhibited while the other copy is preserved in the International Poster Collection at Colorado State University Library. With the variety of subjects, viewpoints and techniques that the posters represent, both the exhibition and the archived collection serve as sources of education, enlightenment and enjoyment. The planning for the 23rd edition is well underway for opening September 2024.
