The Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition (CIIPE) is a biennial gathering of international leaders in poster artistry and leadership. It strives to be an inspiring educational resource for young designers, for broad university communities, for cultural interests, and for accomplished international design luminaries alike. Founded in 1979 by esteemed CSU graphic design professors Phil Risbeck, John Sorbie, and Bob Coonts, it earned the immediate international acclaim that continues to develop with every new exhibition. Its archive stands as a unique capture of design history and social perspectives through time. CIIPE is unique in its origin and in its continuing contributions to international design scholarship. Participants are invited through a continuing study of various cultural publications and exhibition catalogs by the exhibition directors. It is truly a unique model. We ask each designer to jury their own best two works from their previous two years for our showing. A single judge is then asked to choose three equal CIIPE Awards, and three equal Honorable Mentions from those posters for special recognition. The most recent CIIPE features over 100 designers from all corners of the globe.
The Department of Art and Art History at Colorado State University opened the 23rd edition of the Colorado International Invitational Poster Exhibition (CIIPE) September 13, 2024. It is proud to be among the other 10x10 contributors in this worthy outreach to our many global design colleagues.
The main exhibition is installed at the University Curfman Gallery, the Hatton Gallery, and Morgan Library on the CSU Campus. The CIIPE Judge’s exhibition is held at the Gregory Allicar Museum of Art in the University Center for the Arts. CIIPE’s entire poster collection is available for students and faculty in the CSU Poster Collection website and University Archives. It is a unique educational resource, allowing design students to encounter and study the actual printed works.
Poster design is now very quickly seen in miniature on handy electronic devices. It is like walking down a city street with many competing posters screaming for attention, except now our thumbs are doing the walking. Previous generations found their inspirations through the printed pages of periodicals and exhibition catalogs. The CIIPE strives to provide an actual space and the intellectual forum for the discussion of the full-sized relationships that poster designers have always presented to their communities.
Our historically popular event holds a warm place in the hearts of generations of aspiring graphic design students in North America. At the beginning, it offered an in-person experience to view the revered work of the masters that were otherwise seen small in magazines and books. Many dozens of the exhibitors have come to Colorado to discuss their ideas and practice to our students and community. That face-to-face relationship has enriched the imagination of future talents in a changing professional environment. Many students remark how important the show was to their professional development over the years.
