The Istriana’s package design emphasizes the connection with the past. Istria, the Croatian’s region where Istriana’s olive oils are grown, was formerly an important part of the Roman Empire, noted for the high quality of olive oil exported across the empire. Its excellence was even mentioned in ancient Roman inscriptions. With the fall of the Empire, Istria no longer enjoyed the reputation it had during the Roman period. However, in the 90s, it gradually reaffirmed its status as one of the world’s best olive growing regions, by meeting all the requirements for creating top quality olive oil. By combining the amphorae used to store oil with today’s bottles, we created a link between these two periods. Furthermore, the amphorae's shape is identical to those used in Istria at the time. We chose to present its fragments and then meaningfully reassemble those clay pieces, much as how the olive growing tradition in Istria was revived.
Cracks in bottle design are dark glass which, if looked closely, allow us to see the bottle contents. In that sense, we wanted to highlight the idea that olive oil serves as a binder that holds these various fragments together. The logo combines serif and non-serif fonts to reflect both the Roman past and modernity. The color of this olive oil product is determined by its land and tradition. The Istrian land has four varieties of soil: black, white, gray, and red. The soil in which Istriana olive oils grow is red, therefore the color choice was obvious. Additionally, the terracotta color of the amphorae matches the color of the red soil. We mixed a small amount of actual Istrian soil with the paint as well. As a result, each buyer is actually holding a piece of Istrian land.
